This is one of the easier methods of propagation and simply requires the removal of ready-formed plantlets with a sharp blade.
It's better to allow the parent plant to become a little thirsty prior to removing offsets.
This will allow the leaves of the plant to soften a little and will reduce the risk of leaves splitting when we pull the heads apart to insert the knife blade.

Although removing offsets is an easy and commonplace procedure, it shouldn’t be made more stressful to the plants than is absolutely necessary if we want them to make a rapid recovery. Sometimes when we remove offsets there are roots already forming on the offset itself. Instead of leaving the offset with its cut area AND roots to dry out for a week or so before re-potting, protect any roots from drying out during the wait by adding sufficient compost to the pot to just cover the roots but stop short of covering the cut area. |

CC 3092 - H. (a Cocozza hybrid), closer view. By potting-up the root area immediately, the roots can also be watered & do not become desiccated, thus speeding-up the recovery process. The head will probably need to be tilted so that the cut area remains above the level of the moist soil until thoroughly dried and calloused. You can then straighten up the head, top-up the soil and proceed as usual. This particular offset now resides in Belgium. |
