Situated in the heart of England, Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands and the tenth largest in the country. With a present-day population of 280,000, Leicester is one of the oldest towns in England; historically being the Roman military walled city of Ratae Coritanorum. When the Roman military front moved further north Leicester became a civilian city and later also a medieval walled city. It flourished at the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 and the Domesday Book of 1086. Leicester lost its status of city in the 11th century owing to power struggles between the Church and the aristocracy.

King George V visited Leicester on 10th June 1919 and a few days later its status of city was restored. Leicester's suburbs of Aylestone, Belgrave, Braunstone, Evington, Knighton, etc. were completely separate villages at that time.

After the First World War the city expanded extensively with the construction of new housing estates and large areas of land in the open areas of New Parks and Beaumont Leys were taken into the area of the city itself.

People of different races and cultures have gathered in Leicester and today the ethnic minority community accounts for more than a third of Leicester's population.
