Twisted bark on this sweet chestnut (Castanea
sativa).
Closer view of the wonderful bark.
Known as 'Queen Adelaide's oak' and
reputedly the site of a July picnic with the Queen Dowager, the widow of
William 1V.
'The venison was good, so
were the trout...'
The tree is now the worse for wear and a young
replacement grows within its heart. The smooth bark of the younger tree can
be seen growing towards the right and from within the base of the ancient
oak.
The wide and knotted roots of this
long-established oak look more like the rocks it inhabits.
Perched betwixt the ridge and a ditch,
this is Michael's favourite tree in the park.
And this one is mine...
The roots extend almost the full width of the
photograph, seeking nourishment from the rocks.
